| A vegetarian lifestyle brings
with it some interesting challenges such as finding like-minded
people to live with. Here are some helpful tips on how to find
a suitable flatmate. |

|
 |
| Introduction |
| |
There are many advantages to sharing a flat
with other vegetarians. Their habits may still drive you crazy
but remember vegetarian flatmates are unlikely to sneak meat
stock into your soup or keep flesh in the fridge. They won't
give you all the reasons why they just HAVE to keep eating meat
- as if you ever wanted to know.
If you decide that a vegetarian flat is the way to go, the following
are some ways to approach finding a veggie place to live. Another
method may have worked for you; if so, please tell us about
it. |
 |
| Flatting information
for students |
| |
| To move into an already established flat,
check out the general noticeboards around campus, where you
can also put up your own flat wanted ad. Also check if there
is an accommodation service attached to your institution, which
can make your search a little easier. |
 |
| Noticeboards
in health shops and elsewhere |
| |
- Homestead health (112 Cuba Mall, Wellington)
- Ed's juice bar (Victoria Street, Central City)
- Commonsense Organics (Wakefield Street, Central City)
- You could try supermarket noticeboards - vegetarian ads
seem rare - but if it's free it's worth a try.
If you post your own ad, be sure to date it and take it down
when you have found a home. If you have a price range, include
this information as well and mention your views on pets and
smoking. |
 |
| Newspaper and
radio ads |
| |
The Dominion Post runs ads, with the most
listings on Wednesday and Saturday. Look under V for Vegetarian,
but DO read every ad - sometimes people feel the location is
more important than eating habits, so that vegetarian requirements
may only come up later in the ad.
Radio Active run an Accommodation Guide at 9:30 am and 6:30
pm Monday to Saturday, which always seems to include vegetarian
flats. You can get this information at any time by ringing 0900
FLATS (0900 35287). There is a charge for calls - kids ask your
parents first. |
 |
| Our own email
update newsletter |
| |
| Where the timing is right, we can include
accommodation ads in our email update service, 'Vegetarian
Update'. Please contact
us if you are in search of a flat. 'Vegetarian Update',
is produced approximately every 6 - 8 weeks. |
